Route 183 closed near Bernville after 3-vehicle accident

Route 183 is closed just south of Bernville in the area of Blue Marsh Lake in Penn Township after a multi-vehicle crash, one of several affecting the morning rush because of icy roads, Berks County emergency officials said.

The three-vehicle crash happened just after 8:10 a.m. near North Heidelberg Road and involved a dump truck, a tractor-trailer and an SUV, officials said. One of the vehicles flipped over, and several people were being taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries.

Route 183, also known as Bernville Road, is closed between North Heidelberg and Robesonia roads.

Northbound traffic is being diverted onto North Church Road, then back onto Route 183. Southbound traffic is being diverted onto Robesonia Road to Route 422.

Emergency crews summoned PennDOT to send a salt truck to the area.

Several other crashes have been reported throughout the morning rush, including:

• A vehicle slammed into a tree in the 600 block of North Galen Hall Road in South Heidelberg Township at 7:40 a.m.

• A vehicle overturned in the 6100 block of Oley Turnpike Road, about a mile west of Route 662, in Oley Township, about 7:40 a.m.

• A vehicle slammed into a tree at 7:56 a.m. on Sitler Ridge Road near Crystal Cave Road in Richmond Township.
