Schuylkill Haven police to investigate issue at busy intersection

Schuylkill Haven police have been asked to look into the issue of drivers running the  traffic light at the busy intersection of Route 61 and Dock Street.

The issue was brought to the attention of Schuylkill Haven Borough Council at the Feb. 16 meeting by an unidentified resident who said drivers running the light make it very difficult to safely turn off of North Garfield Avenue onto Route 61. The intersection of North Garfield Avenue and Route 61 is one block north of Route 61 and Dock Street.

Police are to look into the issue.

In an unrelated traffic issue, borough council said they will be investigating complaints of a lack of parking along Parkway during lunchtime due to U.S. Postal Service trucks parking along the roadway.

In other business, borough solicitor Mark Semanchik said he continues to investigate noise complaints related to The Cage gym along West Penn Street.

At the Nov. 17 council meeting, residents complained about loud music and talking at all hours of the day and night coming from patrons of the gym.

“People who come in there have radios blaring obnoxious and loud music all hours of the day and night,” said Robert Gilfillan, who lives along Penn Street in the borough.

Police Chief Jeffrey Walcott was at that November meeting and said the business is only open certain hours, but Gilfillan retorted that it was open all night. Walcott and Semanchik promised to look into the issue.

At the latest meeting, residents along West Penn Street questioned council once again about restrictions on a business being open 24 hours a day. Borough Administrator Jessica Seiders said Semanchik continues to investigate.

Seiders said the borough police department has been conducting specific noise checks in the area over the past several weeks. Department officials could not be reached for comment..

In miscellaneous business, a handicapped parking application was approved for a residence along the 200-block of East Market Street.

The Skook Easter Bunny Tour will be happening in 2022, as it did in 2021 and 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions not allowing for an Easter egg hunt.

Proprietor of Main Street Moonshine Lori Michael requested permission to use the medial strip on Parkway from Main Street to Columbia Street for a craft event on May 7 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“I was given permission last May to do a crafter event, which went well,” Michael told council, “attracting more people to our brick-and-mortar businesses in town.”

Council approved Michael’s request.
