Schuylkill Haven to address problem with trees at parking lot

Schuylkill Haven officials believe they have a resolution to a resident’s pointed complaint about trees damaging parked cars near her residence.

In September, Jean Angelo of the 200 block of North Berne Street expressed dismay that a couple of her family’s cars were damaged or destroyed by dead trees that were falling on her vehicles parked in a single-strip parking lot across the street from homes.

Borough solicitor Mark Semanchik promised to research who owns the trees. At the Oct. 4 council meeting, it was announced that the borough owns the needy trees and that workers will be out very soon to identify which trees need maintenance and cut any dead wood to prevent more damage.

At the same meeting in September, resident Edward Sirianni, who also lives along North Berne Street, requested followup on a citizen request to place a mirror at a nearby intersection with a serious blind spot. The addressed intersection was Pine and Front streets, which runs along the river behind North Berne.

At the October meeting the solicitor said some of the property involved is private property, so it would not be in the borough’s purview to erect a mirror.

In other business, council passed a resolution to get the ball rolling on the application process for a water line replacement project along North Berne Street. Frequent water main breaks there have prompted the borough to look at ways to improve the infrastructure. The borough is hoping to take advantage of a state program that funds infrastructure projects from casino-generated revenue.

Council passed a resolution to apply for county money to demolish a blighted property along the 100 block of Parkway.

A resolution to explore the usage of money to upgrade the Willow Playground was passed.

Council approved allowing the Schuylkill Haven Area School District to hold its annual bonfire on the Island for the Haven vs. Blue Mountain Football game.

Council approved fire police assistance for St. Clair’s Halloween parade this month.

The borough pumpkin patch on the Island will happen Oct. 15.
