A District 11 football champion is a certainty after Schuylkill Haven and Williams Valley notched victories in the semifinal on Nov. 4.
The Hurricanes (9-2) and Vikings (9-2) will tangle for the Class 2A title at 6 p.m. Saturday at North Schuylkill in a rematch of their Week 3 contest that the Hurricanes pulled out 24-21 in a thriller.
Top-seeded Schuylkill Haven advanced by dominating the Raptors of Executive Education 71-12. Schuylkill Haven relied on an explosive ground attack, scoring on every offensive possession without throwing a pass. Leading the charge was the 1-2 punch of Haven running backs Aiden Myers and Niko Carestia. The Hurricanes compiled an astonishing 475 yards on the ground.
Williams Valley ran away from Catasauqua for a 34-20 victory at Stauffenberg Field at Viking Field in Williamstown as Alex Achenbach ran for 295 yards and three third-quarter touchdowns. Brady Shomper ran for a touchdown and threw for another to lead Williams Valley, which recovered from an early deficit and some miscues.
In other District 11 football action, Blue Mountain fell 14-0 to Bethlehem Catholic Nov. 3 in the Eagles’ first District 11 home playoff game since 2002. The Golden Hawks (6-5) took advantage of first-half mistakes to claim a 14-0 halftime lead and then held off the Eagles, who finished their season with an 8-3 record.
Minersville (9-2) defeated Nativity (5-6) 19-13 in a thriller Nov. 3, giving the Battlin’ Miners to their first District 11 playoff victory since 2007. Dante Carr’s 1-yard run in overtime put Minersville ahead and Schultz’s interception sealed it. Top-seeded Minersville advances to the Nov. 10 Class A championship against No. 2 Marian, a 14-6 winner over Tri-Valley. The title game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Blue Mountain.
