South Schuylkill News year in review – April

April 7

A crowd of dozens filled Schuylkill Haven Area High School gymnasium for the tenth PTO basket raffle, the first since the COVID-19 pandemic shut down in 2020.

Greenways hosted a public workshop in Muhlenberg Township, Berks County, to talk about the creation of a 20-mile segment of the Schuylkill River Trail that will connect Reading with Hamburg.

In March the U.S. Senate unanimously passed the Sunshine Protection Act, a piece of legislation crafted by Florida Republican Marco Rubio that would make daylight saving time the new permanent standardized time across the country. If approved it would bring an end to the biannual time adjustments in the U.S. on Nov. 5, 2023.

At the Schuylkill Haven Borough Council meeting, Mayor Michael Devlin declared residential parking only for the south side of West Penn Street between St. Charles Street and Tennis Avenue.

PennDOT has awarded a contract for the long-awaited replacement of the Route 443/Columbia Street Bridge in Schuylkill Haven. There is no start date yet but completion is anticipated to be July 2024.

Fourteen area high school football players were honored at the 61st annual awards banquet of the Schuylkill/Pottsville chapter of the National Football Foundation and Collegiate Hall of Fame. They were Ross Bobbin, Blue Mountain, Colin Ibarra, Pine Grove; Kevin Fitzpatrick, Schuylkill Haven; Jackson Yoder, Williams Valley; Mason Boltz, Tri-Valley; Stephan Spolski, Nativity BVM; Caden Burke, Mahanoy Area; Jacob Fenstermacher, Marian Catholic; Luke Tobin, Minersville; Jacob Hall, North Schuylkill; Richard Zabroski, Panther Valley; Raeff Dicello, Pottsville; Owen Kosar, Shenandoah Valley; and Jacob Wasserleben, Tamaqua.

Schuylkill Haven’s new town clock was installed in March at the post office on Main Street. This is the same location as the original Zwerling clock, which was dedicated in May 1992.

A Kentucky man who was driving almost 100 mph when his SUV hit another vehicle and killed Nicholas Winter, 56, and his son, Nicolas, 26, both of Auburn, along Interstate 78 in Greenwich Township was found guilty of homicide by vehicle.

In mid-February, Abbott Nutrition, a medical device company that manufactures Similac infant formulas as well as PediaSure, Pedialyte and other products, initiated a voluntary recall of potentially affected formulas manufactured in its Sturgis, Mich., facility after it was linked to bacterial infections. Since then, baby and infant formula has continued to be in low supply.

April 28

A proclamation was issued to Dr. Joseph Zawisza on behalf of the citizens of Orwigsburg recognizing National osteopathic Medicine Week. Zawisza is an internal medicine doctor, pediatrician and primary care physician with an office at 211 W. Market St.

Deer Lake Borough Council is looking to obtaining grants and permits to repair and rebuild the dam, walking trail and recreation area.

Schuylkill County officials gathered at the Wegman’s Distribution Center near Pottsville on April 19 to honor first responders who put their safety on the line to respond to the disastrous accident on Interstate 768 during a March 28 snow squall.
