Kutztown earned its first shutout win of the season on Saturday.
The Golden Bears beat Bloomsburg 24-0 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East game at Andre Reed Stadium.
Kutztown’s defense forced three turnovers and was stout on third and fourth down, as the Huskies were 2-of-11 on third down and 0-for-1 on fourth down. Bloomsburg made one trip to the red zone, but the drive ended with a turnover on downs.
The shutout was the Golden Bears’ first since they beat Assumption 19-0 in Week 1 last season. Kutztown (2-1, 4-2) held the Huskies (1-2, 2-4) to 139 yards of total offense.
The Golden Bears’ offense was led by running back Darryl Davis-McNeil, who ran for 122 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. The redshirt senior opened the scoring midway through the first quarter with a 1-yard run.
Kutztown added to its lead early in the second quarter when quarterback Donny Blaine found wide receiver Jerome Kapp for a 41-yard touchdown. Saturday’s victory marked the third consecutive game in which the duo has connected for a touchdown of 40 yards or more.
Blaine, a redshirt junior, completed 11-of-19 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns. Kapp, a Boyertown graduate and a graduate senior, finished with two catches for 47 yards.
Kicker Dawson Evitts gave the Golden Bears a 17-0 lead midway through the third quarter with a 24-yard field goal. Kutztown scored again three minutes later, as Blaine found wide receiver Brandon Smith for a 30-yard touchdown.
Daniel Boone graduate Nate Millard finished 3-for-3 on extra point attempts for the Golden Bears. The points were the first of the true freshman’s collegiate career.
Wilkes 35, Alvernia 14: Saturday at Alvernia’s Turf Field, Isaiah Rodriguez threw for 335 yards and three touchdowns, including one of 93 yards, to lead the Colonels over the Golden Wolves in a Middle Atlantic Conference game.
Alvernia (0-3, 1-4) fell behind 14-0, turned it over three times and were outgained 471-312.
EJ Lee ran for 99 yards on 17 carries for the Golden Wolves.
Rodriguez, who entered the game as the conference’s most efficient passer, completed 16-of-25 passes.
He connected with Zane Grover on a 9-yard touchdown pass to put the Colonels (3-1, 4-1) up 7-0 in the first quarter.
A 5-yard run by Elijah Jules gave Wilkes a 14-0 lead.
Alvernia cut it to 14-7 on a 5-yard run with Joseph Perkins with 3:40 left in the first half.
The Colonels scored the game’s next 21 points to put it away.
In the third quarter, Rodriguez threw a 7-yard TD pass to Nate Whitaker.
In the fourth, Walter Lewis ran for a 7-yard touchdown and Rodriguez completed a 93-yard TD pass to Whitaker to make it 35-13 with 7:53 left.
Ozmere Jones scored on a 33-yard run for Alvernia with 5:02 left.
Whitaker finished with 11 yards on three catches.
Alvernia used three players at quarterback.
Monte McMorris completed 6-of-11 passes for 66 yards with one interception; Kevin Washington completed 5-of-7 passes for 31 yards with one interception; and Gregory Harder completed 3-of-5 passes for 54 yards.
The Golden Wolves are without quarterback Colin Payne, a freshman from Exeter who suffered a season-ending lower-body injury last month.
