Three Berks wrestlers win individual titles at out-of-county holiday tournaments

Three Berks wrestlers won individual championships at holiday tournaments held outside the county.

Daniel Boone’s Tucker Hogan and Hamburg’s Chase Homan won at the Neil Turner Memorial Holiday Classic at Conestoga Valley High School in Leola, while Wilson’s Ryan McMillan finished first at the Bethlehem Holiday Wrestling Classic at Liberty High School.

Hogan, a senior and the defending PIAA Class 3A champion at 189 pounds, continued his dominant season with a 17-7 win over Montgomery’s Caden Finck in the 189-pound final on Saturday. Finck finished fifth in the state in Class 2A at 172 last season.

Hogan won his other three matches by pin. He is 19-0 this season with 14 pins, three technical falls and two major decisions.

Homan, a sophomore, defeated Penn Manor’s Gavin Boland 8-5 in the 114-pound final.

McMillan, a senior, pinned Northwestern Lehigh’s Noah Scholfer in 3:04 in the 215-pound final at Bethlehem on Friday. After winning by decision in his first match, he won his final three matches by pin.

Here’s a rundown of other Berks results at each event:

Neil Turner Memorial Holiday Classic: In addition to Daniel Boone and Hamburg, Tulpehocken, Exeter and Muhlenberg also competed in the 34-team event.

Placing for Tulpehocken, which finished 13th: Abramm Schaffer, second, 107; Jack Heckman, fourth, 285; Seth Karpulk, sixth, 139; and Jonathon McQuillen, eighth, 145.

Placing for Exeter, which finished 14th: Michael Borja, second, 139; Kevin Oswalt, sixth, 189; and Cole Forsythe, sixth, 107.

Also placing for Boone, which finished 16th: Dean Houser, third, 133; and Jackson Drumheller, sixth, 127.

Also placing for Hamburg, which finished 25th: Daniel Brady, fifth, 145.

Placing for Muhlenberg, which finished 30th, was Mason Zona, seventh, 189.

Bethlehem Holiday Wrestling Classic: In addition to McMillan, also placing for Wilson, which finished sixth in the 34-team event were McKaden Speece, third, 127; Matteo Garcia, fourth, 160; James Garcia, fifth, 133; Blaise Eidle, fifth, 172; Logan Kurzweg, fifth, 285; and Ethan Brownback, eighth, 189.

Powerade Tournament: Berks Catholic finished 19th in the 69-team event at Canon-McMillan High School, which ended Saturday.

Brody Kline finished eighth at 215 for the Saints.

Jim Thorpe Christmas Tournament: Oley Valley finished 16th at the 26-team event that ended Thursday.

For the Lynx, Nathaniel Kummerer placed third at 107, and Michael Kummerer was sixth at 215.
