The two oldest records in the District 3 boys track and field meet belong to Berks County athletes.
The District 3 Track and Field Championships are Friday and Saturday at Shippensburg University and serve as a qualifier for the PIAA Championships the following weekend back at Shippensburg.
In 1973, Oley Valley’s Barry Stebbins sailed 24-0¾ to set the still existing long jump record in Class AA.
Eight years before that, Gov. Mifflin’s Kim Piersol leaped 24-3¾ to establish what now is the oldest record on the books for the boys in the district meet.
In 2003, Piersol was inducted in the Berks County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame and four years later Stebbins followed suit.
Both marks appear safe again this year, but Reading High’s Xavier Beatty, just a junior, is the top seed at 23-5½ in Class AAA. He will jump on Friday when the weather forecast is calling for cloudy skies with highs in the lows 70s.
In AA, Schuylkill Valley’s Luke Martinez is the top seed at 22-2½.
Berks County athletes own three other records in Class AA, both set in 2022.
J’Ven Williams of Wyomissing, now vying for a starting spot on the offensive line at Penn State, set the district discus record two years ago with a throw of 187-0 as a junior.
At the state meet a week later, Williams won the shot put in 66-7¾, setting the Berks County record, which still stands. He also won the state title in the discus, throwing 167-0.
Williams did not compete in track and field his senior year because he enrolled in Penn State in January that year.
Also in 2022, Schuylkill Valley’s Luke Seymour set the record in the 1600 in 4:16.53.
Seymour, a standout in cross country who also played basketball at Schuylkill Valley, is now running at Penn State.

Schuylkill Valley’s Joe Jardine holds the pole vault record, clearing 15-6 in 2018 to set the Class AA standard.
In AAA, Berks County has two more records.
Reading High’s Imani Brown set the triple jump mark of 48-8¾ in 2012 and Wilson set the 4 x 400 record of 3:17.18 in the same year.
