From United Way of Berks County
United Way of Berks County is working with area nonprofits and partners to share information with Berks Countians in need of community resource information during these challenging times.
“As we connect with many local service providers, we know individuals and families across our community are facing significant uncertainty in the face of the state budget impasse, coupled with the federal government shutdown,” said Tammy White, president of United Way of Berks County. “This guide outlines practical steps to prioritize and connect with critical resources during a time when people are facing reductions or delays in SNAP benefits, income disruptions, and mounting financial stress.”
A primary resource is PA211, which is a one-stop information source for food, housing, utility, mental health, and emergency assistance. Trained, bilingual specialists are available to provide information and referral services. Individuals can connect with the service in a variety of ways: for faster service due to the current high call volume, individuals may text their zip code to 898-211 or visit pa211.org to get connected, in addition to dialing 211.
The guide is available at uwberks.org and includes:
- Steps for accessing food, housing, and utility assistance
- Help with checking benefit status or resolving issues
- Resources for mental health, childcare, and more
- Local contacts, including PA211, Helping Harvest, Centro Hispano, CareerLink, and others
White added, “We encourage others to share the guide with neighbors, colleagues, and networks. It’s meant to be a helpful starting point for those unsure of where to turn next.”
