Projects aimed at improving Orwigsburg borough water infrastructure are either in progress or in preparation.
At its July 9 meeting, borough council learned that DBR Industrial Services completed exterior painting of water plant filters. Contractors will be painting all the piping inside the water plant at a cost of $9,850 when temperatures and humidity are lower and there is no condensation on the pipes.
The water and sewer committee has requested an estimate for installing a permanent generator to provide redundant backup power at one of the borough well buildings. The purchase and installation of a properly-sized generator to run the well station during power failures is estimated at $85,000 to $100,000.
The committee requested a reduced scope and revised cost to provide just a docking station with a manual transfer switch and to rent a generator if needed.
Back in 2011, Entech Engineering completed a hydraulic model for the water distribution system, and now borough officials are recommending to update and calibrate the model periodically with any new developments and projects that have been completed since 2011, helping ensure current and proposed water flow and pressure are properly monitored.
A large oak tree blew over in Albrights Woods causing significant damage to the fence surrounding the water tank. An insurance claim was submitted and payment has been received along with quotes for the repairs. Fence repair is expected to begin in August.
Orwigsburg Area Business and Professional Association is planning an upgrade to the two islands in the square. New plantings, trees, electric service and yard hydrants are included in the plan. Donations are being targeted to complete the project. So far there has been one anonymous donor as well as a $5,000 donation from the Orwigsburg Lions Club. Officials say work to west island is completed, and east island is expected to begin this fall.
Upcoming borough events include Summer Salsa Night on Thursday, July 17 in the M&T lot, a farmers market on July 31, also in the M&T lot, and the next general borough council meeting is set for Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers.
