The Wilson boys swimming team extended its Central Penn League winning streak to 58 and claimed its eighth consecutive CPL title with a 115-71 win over Gov. Mifflin Tuesday at West Lawn.
The Bulldogs girls defeated the Mustangs 137-49 and locked up their fourth straight CPL championship.
The Wilson boys (7-0, 10-0) suffered their last CPL loss against Gov. Mifflin (6-1, 11-1) on Feb. 6, 2014.
Overall, Wilson has won 81 of its last 82 meets with the only loss in the last six years coming to Emmaus in 2020.
Led by senior Chadd Corson, the Bulldogs opened the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay. Corson, Brady Wolf, Takoda Heckman and Luke Kline finished in 1:38.90.
Corson was part of the District 3 Class 3A champion 200 medley relay last year. He also won gold in the 100 backstroke and was the runner-up in the 100 butterfly. He has his sights set on even greater success this year.
“We’re really confident this year,” Corson said. “We have a great lineup and I know our relays are going to be strong this year. I’m just looking forward to dropping more time and I feel like we can finish in the top three.”
Gov. Mifflin’s Ben Gerhard, a Georgia Tech commit, picked up a victory in the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:42.50.
Heckman, a junior, made history in the 200 IM with a pool-record 1:53.56. The previous record was 1:54.13 set by Wilson graduate Nate Savoy in 2010.
“It feels really good and it’s exciting to get it so early in the season,” Heckman said about the record.
Heckman was the district runner-up in the 200 IM last year and believes the time is right to win the event this season.
“I’m hoping to win because the guy who won last year was a senior, so I think I can beat them (the field) this year,” Heckman said.
In the 50 freestyle, Isaiah Eberly finished first in 22.10 to help give the Bulldogs a 39-23 lead going into diving.
Carter Sweigart won the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 320.80. He posted scores of 9.5, 9.5 and 8.5 for his final dive.
Wilson started to run away with the meet after diving. The Bulldogs won the 100 fly as Corson finished in 52.35 and the 100 free as Isiah Eberly finished in 48.01.
Gerhard had an impressive showing in the 500 free, taking the event in 4:38.41 to cut Wilson’s lead to 75-51. Mifflin did not win another event the rest of the way.
Corson took the 100 back in 53.68, and Brady Wolf won the 100 breast in 1:00.97.
Wilson took all three relays, winning the 200 free in 1:29.22 and the 400 free in 3:14.72.
“There was doubt early on,” Bulldogs coach Roy Snyder said regarding his team’s performance. “We knew that Ben Gerhard was probably the premier swimmer in the league this year and their divers are awesome. We were hoping to win all the relays and we did, although they were very close.”
Wilson’s victory came on Senior Night, and Corson reflected on what being a part of the program has meant to him.
“It’s been a great four years, and it’s been an honor swimming with Coach Snyder,” Corson said. “We’ve been a great team. We always call it ‘Team Synergy’ when we’re in big meets and everyone is cheering us on. It’s a great experience.”
