Worrall Recognized as 2024 BCIU Outstanding Community Partner

from Berks County Intermediate Unit

At its Sept. 19 board meeting, the Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU) Board of Directors honored Jay Worrall as the recipient of the 2024 BCIU Outstanding Community Partner Award. Mr. Worrall joins a distinguished group of past recipients in marking the award’s 10th anniversary.

Presented annually by the BCIU, the award recognizes individuals or organizations whose exceptional contributions have significantly impacted the local community and enriched the educational experiences and well-being of the students served. Some of the criteria in the selection of the recipient include the following:

Mr. Worrall not only meets but exceeds the selection criteria for this award. With over 25 years of leadership in the not-for-profit sector, he has consistently demonstrated his commitment to the Berks County community, dedicating his career to supporting those in need. Since October 2019, Mr. Worrall has served as President of the Helping Harvest Fresh Food Bank, where his visionary leadership has strengthened the organization’s mission to “feed the hungry.” In 2024, he was named Board Chair of Feeding Pennsylvania, the state organization of Feeding America Food Banks in Pennsylvania, where he collaborates with a dedicated team to unify food banks statewide and maximize their collective impact.

Mr. Worrall’s collaborative spirit and dedication to service have established a model of community partnerships, implementing innovative programs to support vulnerable populations and inspiring others to join in the work of alleviating hunger and promoting well-being. The Helping Harvest Fresh Food Bank, under the leadership of Jay Worrall, has fostered meaningful partnerships with schools and has provided critical support and resources to students and their families, heightening their ability to thrive academically and personally. In 2022-2023, he was instrumental in extending the Weekender Program to Berks County Intermediate Unit Head Start and Pre-K Counts classrooms, providing students with shelf-stable food to consume when they are not in the classroom. He has also assisted the BCIU in making key connections to explore opportunities for new classrooms to deliver high-quality early childhood programs.
