Wyomissing, Exeter, Wilson and Fleetwood score wins in Berks girls soccer quarterfinals

The final four is set following Saturday’s quarterfinals of the Berks Girls Soccer League playoffs.

Top-seeded Wyomissing defeated eighth-seeded Hamburg 4-0 at Flannery Field. With a one-save performance from junior goalie Ellie Pat Benedict, the result marked the Spartans’ ninth shutout victory of the year.

The Spartans (17-1-1) took a 2-0 lead over the Hawks (14-4-1) in the first half on goals from sophomore Dulce Lytle and senior Annie McCaffrey. Junior Kyla Lytle had the assist on McCaffrey’s goal.

Defending Berks champion Wyomissing extended its lead in the second half with another goal from McCaffrey — this time via a penalty kick — and another goal from Dulce Lytle. McCaffrey was credited with the assist on Lytle’s goal.

“I thought we came out with good energy following a tough loss Thursday against Trinity,” Spartans coach Rachel Hoffman said. “There are little things we need to focus on for the semifinal game, but overall, I was satisfied with how we played.”

The Spartans will host fourth-seeded Exeter on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the semifinals, as the Eagles defeated fifth-seeded Gov. Mifflin 1-0 at Reiffton.

Exeter junior Perla Alvarado-Rueda scored the game-winning goal in the second half off an assist from sophomore Mackenzie Mentzer. The Eagles finished with just three shots on goal.

“I didn’t even grasp that the ball went in until a couple seconds later,” Alvarado-Rueda said. “It was cold, it was raining, the ball was hard to control — but we did it, we won. Our week was full of tough loses but as a team we stayed together and are off to semifinals.”

Junior goalkeeper Taylor Brownback recorded nine saves to help lift Exeter (11-6) to its seventh shutout victory of the season. The result marked the Eagles’ third win over the Mustangs (10-7-1) this year.

“We all worked 110% today, it is a team effort every time we step on the field,” Brownback said. “We came together today as a family and have a lot of work to do to prepare for Tuesday.”

At West Lawn, second-seeded Wilson defeated seventh-seeded Daniel Boone 4-0. The Bulldogs (15-3-1) scored two goals in each half and held the Blazers (11-6) to just two shots on goal.

Senior Emmi McLain and junior Brieana Sheaffer each scored in the first half, before freshman Kaitlin Boston found the back of the net and Sheaffer scored again in the second half. Freshman Claire Troutman had the assist on Boston’s goal.

Freshman goalie Alana Keller recorded two saves for the Bulldogs, who earned their 12th shutout victory of the year.

Wilson will host sixth-seeded Fleetwood on Tuesday at a time to be determined, as the Tigers defeated third-seeded Schuylkill Valley 3-1 at Leesport.

Fleetwood (12-5-1) scored twice in the first half and once in the second half. Senior Bridgette Daczewitz had one goal and one assist, freshman Sophie Toucher and senior Ava Sallee each scored one goal and sophomore Jalina Gonzalez had an assist.

Freshman Presleigh Finkbiner scored the lone goal for the Panthers (16-2-1) in the first half off an assist from freshman Bailey Pekuri . Tigers junior goalkeeper Abby Rowley recorded five saves.

“I’m very proud of our Fleetwood girls soccer team,” Tigers coach Bill Lownes said. “It was a well-fought win over a good and young Schuylkill Valley team in difficult weather conditions.”
