Blue Mountain School officials call for the closing of the Blue Mountain Elementary Cressona. The building no longer meets education, safety and maintenance requirements.

Health care giant Kaiser Permanente expects to acquire Geisinger Health under a deal making the northeaster Pennsylvania system the first to join a new nonprofit committed to quality patient outcomes.

Schuylkill Haven High School students acquired trout eggs that they helped hatch. They worked daily with their biology teacher to help the fish grow from fry into fingerlings in a 50-gallon tank. The surviving fingerlings were released into Bear Creek, a Schuylkill River tributary that runs through the Schuylkill County Fairgrounds.

Red Creek Wildlife Center near Schuylkill Haven took some major steps forward last week, breaking ground on a new main clinic to replace the one destroyed in a fire six months earlier and receiving a $1 million donation toward that project.

Two roads in need of improvement in Schuylkill Haven will soon see new paving.  At the May 3 borough council meeting a paving bid was awarded to H&K Group in the amount of $99,994.

Thirty teams representing Schuylkill County schools met May 3 at the Schuylkill County Fairgrounds and Environmental Education Center in Summit Station to test their enviromental knowledge in the 44th Annual Schuylkill County Envirothon.

Schuylkill County Quilters Guild makes a difference. Annual quilting projects create meaningful gifts for locals in need of warmth.

The Schuylkill United Way hosted its annual Captain Jason B. Jones Memorial Day of Caring on May 12. Hundreds took part with a letter-writing campaign. Over 1,000 letters were received to send to Operation Gratitude who include them in care packages sent to U.S. military personnel around the globe.

Schuylkill River Greenways has a plan in place connecting Philadelphia with Frackville in Schuylkill County. With 120 miles of trails winding along the banks of the Schuylkill River, 80 miles of the trail exists, leaving 40 more to build.

May 25

The Blue Mountain School Board has approved a preliminary 2023-24 school year budget with no tax increase.

Local legislators are looking into improving broadband service around Schuylkill County. Sen. David G. Argall sent an email to a Schuylkill Haven Borough Council member, bringing attention to a state grant program to help the county improve service.

The Pennsylvania Agricultural Surplus System program helps to support the agricultural industry statewide, making connections between farmers and nonprofit organizations responsible for getting more nutritious food into the hands of people at risk of hunger. It uses state funds to pay farmers to harvest, process and transport goods to local food banks.
