1 person found dead in home after home fire in northwestern Berks

Firefighters found a person dead in a Tulpehocken Township home after responding to a blaze there late Tuesday, state police said Wednesday morning.

Crew from the Rehrersburg Fire Company and nearby companies were dispatched to the 100 block of Deck Road after the Berks County Communications Center received a 911 call reporting the fire.

In a news release from the state police at Reading, investigators said two adult occupants escaped the fire without injury.

A second alarm was struck to draw additional crews for manpower and tanker trucks to shuttle water to the scene.

Firefighters removed the deceased individual from the first floor, troopers said. The Berks County coroner’s office was dispatched to pronounce the person dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased was withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The fire originated in the basement of the one-story home but the cause is under investigation by the Troop L fire marshal’s unit, troopers said.

Further information was unavailable Wednesday.
