Twenty residents of an apartment building in Boyertown are displaced after a two-alarm fire broke out early Saturday, according to officials.
Fire crews were called to a structure fire around 2:30 a.m. in the 200 block of East Philadelphia Avenue — drawing about 50 firefighters from eastern Berks and western Montgomery counties.
Jeff Bealer, fire commissioner and public information office with Boyertown Area Fire & Rescue, said that when crews arrived on the scene they found flames and heavy smoke coming from the roof of the building. It took them about two hours to bring the fire under control.
Bealer said there were no injuries but that 20 residents have been displaced. He said the American Red Cross will be providing temporary lodging to one of the displaced residents. The rest have found somewhere else to stay.
Bealer said he believes the fire started on the second or third floor. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the state police fire marshal.
