2 Berks municipalities get state grants to upgrade traffic lights

The state has awarded a total of $817,000 to Boyertown and West Reading to support traffic signal upgrades, increasing safety and mobility across those communities.

The grants were awarded through the PennDOT’s Green Light-Go Program as reimbursement to municipalities to improve the efficiency and operation of existing traffic signals.

The money can be used for a range of operational improvements including installing LED technology, retiming traffic signals, developing special event plans and monitoring traffic signals, as well as upgrading traffic signals to the latest technologies.

The following received funding in Berks:

• Boyertown: $606,798 for updated signal equipment at the intersections of East Philadelphia Avenue and Chestnut Street, and East Philadelphia Avenue and Washington Street.

• West Reading: $209,976 for updated signal equipment along the South Fifth Avenue/Museum Road corridor.

State Rep. David Maloney, who represents Boyertown, said in a release that he had requested the funding for these improvements several years ago due to the congestion caused by truck traffic in the borough.

“Many constituents had asked me for a solution to the congestion caused by truck traffic and a growing population,” he said. “Since my office is in downtown Boyertown, I understood and asked PennDOT for help. It took a while, but they came through. These are very competitive grants and not a lot of representatives have secured them.”
