3 days’ rainfall helpful in Berks but drought warning still in effect

It might feel good Saturday to shake off that nasty cold and damp weather from the previous three days, but better yet was that the precipitation that fell over those days added about 60% to the total for the previous three months.

At Reading Regional Airport, 0.92 inch was recorded for the three-day period, adding to the 1.40 that had been the total recorded from Aug. 20 to Nov. 18.

It’s a start.

The state Department of Environmental Protection-issued drought warning remains in effect, with a voluntary cutback of 10% to 15% in water use urged by the agency.

There are opportunities for rain coming up this week during the Monday night-Tuesday and Thursday-Friday periods. The daytime highs are likely to be above normal until a cold front rolls in Tuesday, pushing those highs back down into the 40s.

It looks like a chilly and wet Thanksgiving is in the offing.

The normal high temperature is 51 degrees, declining to 50 during the next few days. The average temperature for the month at the airport through Friday is 51.3 degrees, 5.4 above normal.

It’s too soon to say how well that surplus will hold up against the final week of the month and where the month will end in terms of the 10 warmest Novembers, but likely high on the list.

There were two 80-degree days this month, including an 83 on Nov. 6, the latest 80-degree reading in a year on record. The temperature database begins with measurements from 1898.

Shortly before the rainy days set in, the Reading area set a record for the driest 90-day segment on record at 1.39 inches, knocking off a 90-day segment in the fall of 1886 for that unfortunate distinction. The precipitation database begins with measurements from 1869.
