3 teens seriously injured when car collides with 18-wheeler in northern Berks

Three teens were seriously injured Tuesday night when a car traveling at a high speed crashed into the side of a tractor-trailer on Route 61 in northern Berks County while the 18-wheeler was making a left turn onto an Interstate 78 ramp, state police said.

The crash happened about 10:15 p.m. in Tilden Township, troopers at the Hamburg station said.

All three occupants of the car, including an 18-year-old male from Wyomissing who was the driver; a 17-year-old male from Reading and a third male who wasn’t identified, were taken to Reading Hospital for their injuries.

According to emergency dispatches, two of the teens were unconscious upon arrival of first responders, and one of them was trapped in the wreckage.

The truck driver, a 37-year-old Allentown man, was evaluated at the scene by emergency medical personnel but declined to be taken to a hospital

Witness reports indicated the southbound car was traveling at a high speed just prior to the crash. The northbound truck was turning left onto the westbound onramp.

The car struck the passenger side near the back end of the trailer.

Multiple agencies assisted state police, including the state police crash reconstruction and forensic services units.
