6 vehicles crash in pair of accidents on Route 422 in West Reading

A pair of accidents on Route 422 in West Reading led to a multi-vehicle pileup Thursday afternoon, West Reading police said.

The accidents occurred in the east and westbound lanes of Route 422 near the Penn Avenue exits, police said.

The first accident happened about 3:16 p.m. in the eastbound lane.

It involved a vehicle in the passing lane, which slowed for traffic before attempting to move to the right lane to avoid being rear ended by the vehicle in back, police said.

“The vehicle behind went between that car and the median, striking the median and (the car in front),” said Sgt. Wayne Holben of the West Reading police. “Both vehicles were drivable after the accident and there were no injuries.”

The second accident happened about 3:41 p.m., and involved a 4-vehicle pileup in the westbound lane of Route 422.

The first vehicle stopped for traffic and was rear ended by the vehicle behind it, Holben said, with the third and fourth vehicles also rear-ending those in front of them.

There were no injuries reported, but two vehicles were towed from the westbound pileup.

Both directions of Route 422 were partially closed for about 45 minutes to an hour after the accidents, Holben said.

He said it was unknown whether the initial accident in the eastbound lane contributed to the later pileup.
