Driver ‘serious’ after 2-vehicle accident on Route 422 in western Berks

An accident Thursday morning on Route 422 in Heidelberg Township left a 76-year-old man in serious condition, according to South Heidelberg Township Police Chief Leon Grim.

The man was rushed by ambulance to the Reading Hospital following the two-car crash shortly after 9 a.m. at Hill Road between Robesonia and Womelsdorf.

South Heidelberg police are contracted to provide police services to Heidelberg Township.

Two emergency room nurses stopped at the scene and gave aid prior to ambulances arriving, according to Grim.

He said the driver was hit after veering into the opposing lane and turning in front of a vehicle.

The injured driver possibly suffered a medical emergency behind the wheel, causing him to drive erratically, the chief said.

The other driver, also a 76-year-old man, was shaken up but uninjured, Grim said.

The chief did not provide the names of the drivers, or say if there were passengers in the vehicles.
