Angled street parking removed on Old Wyomissing Road in Reading

Changes made recently to the street parking in two blocks of Old Wyomissing Road have been reversed, Reading officials said.

Officials said the angled parking lines in the 800 and 900 blocks were removed in November due to safety concerns.

Parking in the blocks had been changed in June from parallel curbside to angled head-on spaces to accommodate overflow parking at West Reading’s pickleball and basketball courts.

The courts on parkland owned by West Reading lie within the city limits of Reading.

The parking change prompted residents of the two blocks to voice their concerns about safety and aesthetics at several City Council meetings.

Elizabeth Phelan, a resident of the 900 block and outspoken opponent of angled parking in the blocks, speaking on behalf of herself and group of concerned neighbors, thanked the city at City Council’s Nov. 12 meeting.

“I just wanted to thank everybody on the council, the whole neighborhood does,” she said. “We wanted to thank everyone here for your attention to what really mattered to us and for making us feel like living in the city of Reading actually means something to us as individuals. So thank you for that.”

Phelan and others frequently voiced their concerns at council meetings over the months since the lines were painted in June.

To park in the angled spaces, she and others said, vehicles were forced to make U-turns on the mile-long dead-end street.

The residents said the frequent U-turns posed a safety hazard to children and others using the park system as well as to residents.
