Annual belt sander charity race set for Saturday

Have you ever been doing a home improvement project, looked down at the whirring belt sander in you hands and thought “I bet I could ride this”?

If you have — or even if you haven’t — New Bertie’s Inn in has an event for you.

The Exeter Township tavern will host its 32nd Belt Sander Charity Race on Saturday. The event will feature racers hopping atop belt sanders and holding on for dear life as they zoom down a short track.

The event will raise funds for the Olivet Boys and Girls Club.

“Berks County is the best,” Olivet CEO Rick Perez said. “We are grateful for John and Patricia Miravich, the owners of the New Bertie’s Inn, for their continued support and for keeping this tradition alive. This event is always a fun and exciting time for race participants and onlookers. We appreciate that their generosity will benefit our members and programs.”

This year’s event is the third that will be held at New Bertie’s, whose owners constructed a new track and purchased new belt sanders to keep the race going. Over more than three decades, the race has raised funds for a host of local organizations including the Multiple Sclerosis Society and the homeless youth program at Mary’s Shelter.

Door will open Saturday at 10 a.m., with the races beginning at 1:30. Participants are asked to report by 12:30 p.m.
