Annual Toy Run benefits Children’s Home of Reading

The Children’s Home of Reading got an early start on the holiday season thanks to the ABATE Motorcycle Club.

The club recently held its annual Toy Run with participants from across Berks County. Motorcycles, cars, trucks, buses and other street-legal vehicles joined the festivities.

The convoy started at Meadowbrook Country Club, 1153 Rick Road, Bern Township, and ended at the Children’s Home, 1010 Centre Ave.

“Every year, the Toy Run launches our holiday gift drive, and our staff and residents look forward to it with great excitement,” said Jill Troutman, Children’s Home vice president of marketing and advancement. “The kids love watching the parade of motorcycles and cars arrive, and it’s a wonderful break from their normal routine.”

Troutman said the tradition has continued for more than 30 years.

This year, the home expects to serve more than 4,000 children and families through its 35 programs, she said.

Each child can request three items valued between $25 and $30, as well as a gift card to a store of their choice — amounting to over 16,000 gifts, Troutman said.

“Who knew Santa’s workshop is right here in Reading?” she asked.

The gift cards are especially valued by the children, many of whom never had the chance to buy something new for themselves, said Dr. Vincent LaSorsa, Children’s Home president and CEO.

“We serve many teens, and gift cards help them learn important skills like budgeting and saving,” LaSorsa said.

Cards for gas stations, restaurants and local and online retailers help teach budgeting skills and wise purchasing as the older youth begin to drive and gain independence, he noted.

“We are incredibly grateful to all the motorcycle clubs and participants, especially Bob Yohn and Allyson Kelly, who organize and participate in this wonderful event and the holiday gift drive each year,” Troutman said. “This is truly the most special and busiest time of year, but the joy these gifts bring to the children and the generosity of our community is beyond touching.”

Though the gift drive is off to a good start, groups and individuals are still needed to help ensure every child feels the warmth of a caring community this holiday season, Troutman said.
