AT&T, YMCA of Reading & Berks County, and Human I-T Team Up to Bridge Digital Divide in Reading

From YMCA of Reading & Berks County

AT&T, YMCA of Reading & Berks County, and Human I-T teamed up to provide 50 refurbished laptops for the students in grades 3-12, and 20 tablets with protective covers to K-3 students who participate in programs at the Reading nonprofit. The devices were distributed during a special “Holiday in July Celebration” at the Reading YMCA that also included sessions on online safety and an introduction to the resources available on AT&T’s The Achievery.

According to U.S. Census Bureau data, millions nationwide still don’t have access to the internet or connected devices needed to fully participate in the online world, an issue known as the digital divide.

This effort is part of AT&T’s initiative to help address the digital divide through internet accessibility, affordability, and safe adoption. AT&T is committing $5 billion to help 25 million people get and stay connected to high-speed internet by 2030. This includes distributing more than 3,200 computers to students and their families across Pennsylvania since 2021. The Y procured the tablets with the help of a $10,000 financial contribution from AT&T last year.

The Achievery is an online platform developed by AT&T that offers K-12 students educational activities at no cost.

“AT&T is proud to collaborate with organizations like the Reading and Berks YMCA and Human I-T to help close the digital divide in Pennsylvania,” said David Kerr, president, AT&T Pennsylvania. “Access to connectivity is vital in helping to bridge the digital divide, and we are glad we can provide these resources to those who need them most.”
