Balloons released in memory of 2 teens killed in Schuylkill County

More than 100 people attended a balloon release Tuesday in memory of two Schuylkill County teenagers who were killed this month.

More than 200 pink, red, black and orange balloons were released at the New Philadelphia Little League field in memory of Hunter Mock, 18, and Angelito Xavier Caraballo, 16, both of New Philadelphia, who were found dead Oct. 10 in a wooded area off Ferndale Road about 1 mile east of Route 209. They were reported missing earlier that week. Their deaths were ruled as homicides, but no charges had been filed as of Tuesday.

Pink was chosen because it was Mock’s favorite color, while Caraballo’s favorites were red and black. Orange was included because both of them loved Halloween.

“We love you, guys,” Kate Mock, mother of Hunter, said after she released her balloon into the air.

The event was meant to show how important the teens were to the borough, as well as reassure community members that they can overcome these difficulties and continue the quest for justice.

“When times are tough, we are going to stand together,” Mock said.

Tanya Evans, Caraballo’s mother, said she was grateful for the community’s support.

Jacob Vega, 10, Mock’s brother, described him as very heartwarming and friendly. He said they often played the game Minecraft together and went fishing.

The balloon release was attended by family and friends, including Connor Schell, 16, of Cumbola.

“There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about them,” Schell said.

Memories

Two tables were set up with photos of Mock and Caraballo. There was also a notebook for attendees to leave messages.

Somerli Sanchez, 6, sat in front of the display with pictures of Caraballo.

“She took it real hard,” said her father, Ruben Sanchez, 30, of New Philadelphia.

He said he didn’t tell her exactly how Caraballo died.

Sanchez said his daughter didn’t know Mock, but he knew both victims. Looking around the field, he said the love for them was obvious.

“It’s tragic,” he said.
