Basketball roundup: Berks Catholic boys win on final-seconds clutch shot

Kingston McKoy made the game-winning shot with 5.4 seconds left to give Berks Catholic a 51-49 high school boys basketball victory over Wilson on Tuesday in a battle of top-ranked teams in District 3.

The Saints (11-3) are ranked first in Class 4A and Wilson (15-3) is top ranked in Class 6A.

The two teams are now tied at 6-2 in the BCIAA Division 1 standings.

McKoy, who scored 22 points in the game to lead all scorers, made a three-pointer and two field goals, including the game-winner, in the final period as the Saints outscored the Bulldogs 17-13 in the final eight minutes to overcome a two-point deficit at the end of three quarters.

Zach Suski and Bryce Gumby hit three-pointers and Gavin Welker and Carmelo Harper each had a bucket in the final period for Berks Catholic.

The Saints bolted to a 17-10 lead after one quarter with Welker hitting two three-pointers and McKoy scoring four points.

The Bulldogs roared back in the second quarter, outscoring the Saints 16-8 to take a 26-25 lead.

For Wilson, Madyx Gruber, who passed the 1,000-point scoring mark in his career in Saturday’s win over Harrisburg, hit two three-pointers and Jon Etim had five points and Luke Levan four.

In the third quarter, Gruber scored seven points as the Bulldogs outscored the Saints 10-9 for the two-point lead heading into the final period.

Welker finished with 10 points for the Saints, Gruber had 16 points and Correll Akings (seven in the first quarter) had 14 for the Bulldogs.

Girls

Tulpehocken 36, Kutztown 36

Juliet Snyder scored 14 points to lead the Trojans to a 38-36 win in high school girls basketball on Tuesday.

Avery Baransky added 12 points for the Trojans.

For the Cougars, Kaitlyn Houptley had 14 points.

Muhlenberg 54, Gov. Mifflin 50

Lianna Martir scored 19 points to lead Muhlenberg to a 54-50 win over Gov. Mifflin.

Also for the Muhls, Ryanna Hightower-Prentice scored 12 points and Mia Fernandez added 11.

For the Mustangs, Bella Super had 18 points.

Twin Valley 40, Conrad Weiser 35

Hailey Kilgore scored 16 points to lead the Raiders to a 40-35 win over the Scouts on Tuesday.

For Conrad Weiser, Lauren Grabosky had 15 points.

Oley Valley 48, Brandywine Heights 40

Lily Hare scored 17 points to lead Oley Valley to a 48-40 win over Brandywine Heights on Tuesday night.

Also for the Lynx, Kadyn Rhoads had 10 points.

For the Bullets, Addison Benner had 16 points, and Sophia Benner and Jenna Crist each had 11 points.

Wilson 55, Berks Catholic 41

Ryan Leaman and Kailani Hardy each scored 16 points to lead Wilson to a 55-41 win over Berks Catholic on Tuesday.

Also for the Bulldogs, Laura Crocona had 12 points.

For the Saints, Madison Langdon had 11 points and Sydney Corado had 10.
