Berks basketball playoffs: Top seeds advance through the quarterfinals

The top four seeds all advanced through the quarterfinals of the BCIAA boys basketball tournament on Monday night.

Top-seeded Berks Catholic defeated Antietam 68-47 to set up a semifinal game with fourth-seeded Reading High, which beat fifth-seeded Wyomissing 77-56.

In the lower half of the bracket, second-seeded Wilson dispatched of seventh-seeded Schuylkill Valley 72-48, and third-seeded Gov. Mifflin downed sixth-seeded Exeter 68-52.

The semifinals are Wednesday at Santander Arena in Reading with Wilson and Gov. Mifflin playing at 5:30 p.m., and Berks Catholic and Reading High tipping off at 8:30 p.m.

In Wilson’s win over Schuylkill Haven, Madyx Gruber led the Bulldogs with 23 points and Correll Akings added 14.

Gruber scored 10 points in the second quarter as Wilson led 45-31 at halftime.

For the Pathers, Cooper Hohendahl scored 12 points.

Also on Monday, the fourth quarterfinal in the girls tournament was played, after being postponed on Saturday because of inclement weather, with Wilson beating Schuylkill Valley 63-19.

For the Bulldogs, Laura Crocona scored 14 points and Kailani Hardy added 11 as 10 different players scored for Wilson.

The girls semifinals will also be Wednesday at Santander Arena with second-seeded Wilson playing third-seeded Gov. Mifflin at 4 p.m. and top-seeded Wyomissing playing fourth-seeded Reading High at 7 p.m.
