Reading High defeats Schuylkill Valley in Berks boys basketball quarterfinal

Ruben Rodriguez scored 23 of his game-high 24 points in the first half to lead Reading High to an 84-34 win over Schuylkill Valley in a Berks Conference quarterfinal game Monday at the Geigle.

The top-seeded and defending champion Red Knights (22-1) advance to face fifth-seeded Wilson (17-6), a 54-53 quarterfinal winner over Fleetwood, in a semifinal game Wednesday at Santander Arena at 7:30 p.m.

Second-seeded Exeter will play third-seeded Berks Catholic in the first game at 6 p.m.

In Monday’s game, Reading High led 36-12 after one quarter as Rodriguez scored 13 points. The Red Knights were up 55-21 at the half against the eighth-seeded Panthers (17-6).

Aris Rodriguez scored 14 points, 11 in the first half, and Myles Grey finished with 13 for Reading High, which won in the quarterfinals for the 22nd straight year.

The Red Knights last failed to reach the semifinals in 2001, when they were beat 64-52 by Oley Valley.

Dominic Giuffre led Schuylkill Valley with seven points.

The Panthers next will play in the District 3 Class 4A playoffs, which open Monday, Feb. 20. Schuylkill Valley is seventh in the district power rankings and in line to host a game. The top 10 teams qualify.

Reading High has won both games against Wilson this season. The Red Knights won 44-39 at Wilson on Jan. 5, and 56-43 at the Geigle earlier this month.
