Berks Book Bonanza set for September at new headquarters

For the first time since 2021, the Berks Book Bonanza is returning.

A scaled-down version of the sale will be held from Sept. 20 through 22 at its new headquarters at the Berks County South Campus at 400 E. Wyomissing Ave. in Mohnton.

The past two years, without a place to call home, the sale was canceled.

But in April, the Berks County commissioners approved a five-year agreement to host the book sale at the South Campus — a move that should bring some stability to the event for at least a little while. The agreement provides just under 9,800 square feet of warehouse space for the book sale at the facility.

The Book Bonanza is one of the largest book sale operations in the region, offering gently-used hardcover and paperbacks, CDs, DVDs, puzzles and games at prices of $2 or less for general items. They also offer specialty materials and collectible books.

Organizers say there are a few notable differences this year compared to previous sales:

• The sale will run over three days: Sept. 20 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sept. 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

• There will be no early admission sale for the public. All three days will be free admission with Sunday earmarked for the $5 Fill-a-Bag sale.

• No carts will be permitted inside the building.

• There will not be a holding room available for large orders. Shoppers are encouraged to make smaller trips to their vehicle throughout their time at the sale.

• The sale is cash or check only with no onsite ATMs available. Identification will be required for all check purchases.

The entrance to the sale will be located behind the building by the covered ramp.

The Book Bonanza is run by more than 70 volunteers. The proceeds from the sale are split evenly between the Friends of Berks County Libraries and the local branch of the American Association of University Women.
