Berks boys soccer: Drew Latourelle leads Wyomissing to win over Tulpehocken

Wyomissing defeated Tulpehocken 2-1 in a Berks Division III boys soccer game at Flannery Field on Tuesday.

Both teams were coming off their first loss of the season as Wyomissing fell to Muhlenberg 4-3 on Saturday. Tulpehocken was defeated by Berks Catholic 2-1 last week.

“You have to bounce back. Obviously, Saturday was tough, especially in the fashion it was,” Spartans coach Eric Miller said. “But this is a huge game, against a fantastic team and we’re at home. So you just want to hopefully take care of business, come out, and play the way you’re capable of.”

With something to prove in a league matchup, both teams put their best effort on the field.

The Spartans (7-1) struck first 10 minutes into the game. Drew Latourelle hit a header past goalkeeper Dominic Stoudt off an assist by Brady Kuhn.

“Brady Kuhn with the perfect pass,” Latourelle said of his first goal. “It was just right there with my head right there. It was a perfect pass.”

The rest of the first half was a defensive battle. Neither team scored.

Goalkeeper Cole Sensenig had a solid game for the Spartans with four saves. Stoudt had seven for the Trojans.

In the second half, defense was still the name of the game as each team struggled offensively.

At the 26:31 mark in the half, the Trojans (7-2) got themselves on the board.

Sensenig came out of the goal to try and scoop up the ball before any Trojans could make a play. However, Graeson Reece passed to Van Koch as he knocked in a goal right past a diving Sensenig.

With the game tied at 1 apiece, the next goal of the game would likely lead to a victory.

About 18 minutes later, Latourelle scored his second goal from the left side after an assist from Oluwadamare Johnson-Agiri.

“He’s a playmaker,” Miller said of Latourelle. “The kid is fantastic.”

With only eight minutes left, the Trojans had a few opportunities to score but failed to tie the game.

The Spartans walked off the field with an impressive league win over another talented club.

“They came together, covered for each other well. It’s hard because Tulpy has a lot of talent,” Miller said. “We did a good job covering for each other and picking up the second balls. Cole (Sensenig) did a great job, coming out and making a difference too.”

“It was a big win, first time playing Tulpy we always have to show out,” Latourelle said.

At about the halfway mark through the season, the Spartans want to keep their momentum up game after game.

“Good but still a lot of soccer to play, though,” Miller said. “We have a lot of games, kind of every other day we have a game. So hopefully we can keep up this momentum and run with it.”

“We’re 7-1 right now so I mean, we’re feeling good, we know we can beat anyone that we play so we’re ready for the next one against Kutztown,” Latourelle said.
