Berks high school football roundup: Conrad Weiser goes to 7-0; Reading High beats McCaskey

Conrad Weiser improved to 7-0 by scoring 24 unanswered points in the second half to beat Garden Spot 24-6 on Friday night in a Lancaster-Lebanon Section 3 football game.

The Scouts took a 7-6 lead in the third quarter on quarterback Donovan Gingrich’s 15-yard scoring run and Alex Malone’s extra point kicks.

The game was tied 0-0 at halftime and Garden Spot (3-4, 1-3) took a 6-0 lead early in the second half when Seth Musselman scored on a 9-yard run.

The Scouts (4-0 LL Section 3) built a 14-6 lead early in the fourth quarter when Gingrich hit Evan Rittle with a 25-yard TD pass and Malone converted the kick.

After Malone kicked a 24-yard field goal to make it 17-7,  Gingrich put the game away with a 27-yard TD run.

Gingrich completed 15 of 21 for 152 yards, and he rushed for 50 yards on 13 carries. Rittle caught eight passes for 65 yards.

Conestoga Valley 28, Gov. Mifflin 21

Gov. Mifflin gave unbeaten Conestoga Valley all it could handle before the Buckskins pulled out a 28-21 LL Section 2 football win over the Mustangs on Friday night.

The Mustangs (3-4, 1-2) tied the game at 21-all in the fourth quarter on Reese Hohl’s 8-yard touchdown run.

Conestoga (7-0, 3-0) regained the lead on Sawyer Esbenshade 5-yard touchdown run and Carson Erb’s extra point kick made it 28-21.

Travis Jenkins’ 5-yard TD run put the Mustangs ahead 7-0 in the first quarter, but Conestoga responded with touchdowns by Cordell Bair, a 31-yard pass from Esbenshade, and Teagan Ruble, a 6-yard run.

Mifflin then tied the game on Grady Garner’s 34-yard run, but Conestoga took a 21-14 halftime lead on Esbenshade’s 8-yard TD pass to JoJo Garcia.

Garner gained 178 yards on 28 carries, and now has 1,011 yards on the season on 171 carries.

Berks Catholic 35, Kutztown 34

Berks Catholic stopped a two-point conversion by Kutztown with 37 seconds left in the game to beat the Cougars 35-34 after trailing 28-7 in the second half.

The Cougars (0-7, 0-4 LL Section 5) made it 35-34 on Brenden Ackley ‘s 5-yard TD run, but the Saints stopped the two-point conversion and then ran out the clock.

With the score tied at 28, the Saints (3-4, 2-2 LL Section 5) took a 35-28 lead with 7:42 to play when Nate Rose scored on a 3-yard run and Jay Tripathi kicked the extra point.

Ackley scored on runs of 4, 2 and 26 yards in the first half as the Cougars built a 28-7 lead. The other Kutztown touchdown was Mason Sherry’s 84-yard kickoff return after Berks Catholic got on the board when Jackson Kozik caught a 18-yard TD pass from Zach Suski to make it 14-7.

Bryce Gumby scored on a 33-yard run for the Saints with 3:06 left in the half to make it 28-14 at intermission.

In the third quarter, Gumby scored on a 41-yard run and a 10-yard pass from Suski, the later tying the game at 28-all.

Gumby finished the game with 222 yards rushing on 16 carries.

Ackley gained 110 on 19 carries.

Reading High 38, McCaskey 14

Gabe Laws ran for three touchdowns as Reading High defeated McCaskey 38-14 in a LL Section 1 game.

Laws gave the Red Knights (2-5, 1-3) a 7-0 lead just 1:59 into the game on a 5-yard touchdown run.

A Kayson Fritz 51-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Beatty and a Jondre Guzman 35-yard field goal made it 17-0 after the first quarter.

Laws scored on a 4-yard run late in the second quarter to put Reading High ahead 24-0 at halftime.

Laws had another 4-yard TD run and Alexis Alvarado a 1-yard TD run in the second half.

Fritz gained 128 yards rushing on 13 carries and Alvarado gained 104 yards on 19 carries.

McCaskey is 2-5, 0-3 LL Section 1.

Pequea Valley 24, Hamburg 17

Pequea Valley opened a 24-0 lead in the first half and held off Hamburg enroute to a 24-17 LL Section 5 victory.

Drew Tibbins scored on runs of 5 and 3 yards as Pequea (4-3, 2-2) opened its lead.

Hamburg (5-2, 3-1) got on the board in the second quarter with an Eli Blatt 24-yard field goal.

The Hawks made it 24-10 in the third quarter on a Blaise Ernst 23-yard touchdown run, and then they closed to 24-17 on Tyler Shuey’s 47-yard TD pass to Daniel Brady in the fourth quarter.

Shuey completed 13 of 23 passes for 202 yards, and Ernst gained 86 yards on 16 carries. Ty Werley caught six passes for 129 yards.

Warwick 35, Fleetwood 14

Warwick built a 35-0 lead enroute to defeating Fleetwood 35-14 in an LL Section 3 game.

Warwick is 4-3, 3-1. Fleetwood is 3-4, 0-3.

The Tigers scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter – Chase Domenech caught a 97-yard pass from Chase McMonagle, and Nathan Kummerer scored on a 12-yard run.

McMonagle completed 13 of 30 passes for 200 yards, but threw four interceptions. Domenech had four catches for 131 yards.

Schuylkill Valley 42, Columbia 6

Logan Nawrocki threw five touchdown passes as Schuylkill Valley stayed unbeaten in league play with a 42-6 win over Columbia.

The Panthers are 4-0 in LL Section 5 and 5-2 overall. Columbia is 0-7, 0-4.

Nawrocki completed 12 of 13 passes for 235 yards.

He threw two touchdown passes to Dillon Lackner (17 and 30 yards) and two to Kowen Gerner (40 and 16 yards). Logan Cammauf caught the other TD pass, a 9-yarder.

The Panthers’ other score was a 1-yard run by Brandon Pyle.

Cooper Hohenadel gained 80 yards on the ground on eight carries. Kerner caught five passes for 98 yards.
