Berks man held for court on vehicular homicide charges in Route 422 crash that killed Schuylkill man

A Berks County man who police said caused a crash on Route 422 near Robesonia that killed a Schuylkill County man was held for court on vehicle homicide charges after a preliminary hearing this week.

Luke A. Thomason, 27, of South Heidelberg Township, remained free to await further proceedings in Berks County Court after the hearing Monday before District Judge Ann L. Young. Thomason also faces charges of reckless endangerment, careless driving resulting in death, reckless driving and related offenses.

According to South Heidelberg police:

About 4:35 p.m. on Aug. 29, Thomason was driving east on Penn Avenue, which is Route 422, in Heidelberg Township at a high rate of speed.

He failed to stop for the red traffic signal at Big Spring Road and struck a vehicle driven by Brian Strubhar, 57, of Pine Grove who was northbound on Big Spring and had entered the intersection with a green light.

Strubhar suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Thomason was hospitalized for unspecified injuries.

South Heidelberg police were assisted in the investigation by state police and the Berks County district attorney’s forensic services unit.
