Best Buy recalls almost 1 million pressure cookers after users burned by ‘ejected’ contents

Best Buy has recalled almost 1 million pressure cookers after some users were burned when the contents were “ejected.”

The inside of the Insignia brand cookers has incorrect volume markings, which potentially allows users to overfill them.

“This can cause consumers to overfill the pot and hot food and liquids to be ejected when the pressure cooker is vented using the quick release method or opened while its contents are pressurized, posing a burn hazard to consumers,” according to an announcement with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Included in the recall are 930,000 pressure cookers sold at Best Buy stores nationwide and online as well as online at Amazon from October 2017 through June 2023 for between $50 and $120.

  • The recalled model numbers of the Insignia Multi-Function pressure cookers are – NS-MC60SS8, NS-MC60SS9 or NS-MC80SS9.
  • The inner cooker pots have the model numbers NS-MCRP6NS9 and NS-MCRP6SS9, sold separately as replacements.

The electric pressure cookers and inner cooker pots have 6- and 8-quart capacities.

According to the announcement, “Best Buy has received 31 reports of incidents in which the contents were expelled under pressure, including 17 reports of burn injuries, some of which involved reports of second-degree and severe burns.”

People who own the pressure cookers can contact Best Buy to get a free inner pot replacement and a floating locking valve to signal pressure.
