Boscov’s annual charity event — Friends Helping Friends — is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 18 at Boscov’s stores throughout its geographic footprint.
In the months leading up to the annual event, nonprofit organizations have been selling shopping passes to their supporters. The nonprofit gets the $5 cost of the pass, while those that buy the passes receive a 25% discount in-store at Boscov’s on Oct. 18.
“We’re proud to say that this year has been our most successful Friends Helping Friends event ever,” Jim Boscov, chairman and CEO of Boscov’s said in a statement. This is the 27th year Friends Helping Friends has been held.
The retail chain has announced a $3 million goal for this year’s initiative. According to Boscov, 3,000 nonprofit organizations have distributed more than 600,000 shopping passes.
The one-day event represents Boscov’s biggest sale of the year and has become an annual occasion with many using their passes to get some of their holiday shopping done — while supporting their favorite charity, according to a press release. All Boscov’s stores will also offer extended store hours from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.
“This event has developed into a wonderful opportunity for both our customers and non-profit partners and we believe the $3 million goal is realistic,” Boscov added. Last year’s Friends Helping Friends event resulted in nonprofit partners receiving more than $2 million worth of shopping passes.
Wednesday’s Friends Helping Friends will be held at 49 of Boscov’s 50 stores. Excluded this year is the chain’s newest location in Bridgeport, W. Va., which opened earlier this month.
