Boyertown food drive, community event to honor boy’s legacy

The Boyertown Area Multi-Service will host the 7th Annual Preston’s Pantry Food Drive and Community Event to honor the continued legacy of a Douglass Township boy’s selflessness and passion for helping others.

Preston’s Pantry, a food pantry in Boyertown, is named in memory of Preston Dray, who died in a flash flood along with his mother and unborn sister in 2019.

In May 2018, Preston, 8, organized a food drive for a school project and collected 45 pounds of food.

“His passion for helping others in this community touched our hearts when we delivered his donation to the Multi-Service facility. It truly shows an act of kindness, no matter how small, can go a long way,” the pantry staff said in the release.

The Food Pantry staff, volunteers and community still see the impact that Preston has made and, in return, continue to strive to keep his legacy alive.

“Preston’s kindness has brought awareness to our community and especially youth in our area” the staff said.

Since opening its doors in 1973, the food pantry has seen a progressive increase in its service to the community. In 2025, the Pantry currently serves 381 households and 1,052 individuals, providing food assistance to those who do not have the financial means to meet their nutritional needs.

Preston’s Pantry Project is a group of community members who came together to honor a community service project Preston started and to continue his selfless contribution to helping others in need. The Project was created to carry on Preston’s legacy and in memory of him, his mother Pamela and his unborn sister, Evelynn.

Community Event

The 7th Annual Preston’s Pantry Food Drive and Community Event will be held at the Boyertown Area Multi-Service, 200 West Spring St., from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 3. The free admission event features activities and encourages attendees to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to Preston’s Pantry.

“We are excited to hold this year’s event again and have his legacy live on by giving to those in need,” organizers said.

In addition to collecting non-perishable food donations at the event, there will be a variety of activities. The community event will include music, food trucks, bounce houses, a dunk tank, face painting, balloon animals, rock painting, a petting zoo and more.
