Brandywine Community Library honored its mascot, a Greek tortoise named Sheldon, with festivities at the Topton Community Park on Saturday, Aug. 10.
“Sheldon’s birthday party was a hit!” Mary Shoemaker, Brandywine Community Library trustee and event chairperson, said in the release.

The event celebrated Sheldon’s 37th birthday and kicked off with free family activities including yard games, face painting, sand art, rock painting and coloring activities.
Party goers enjoyed cupcakes with tortoise figurines. Herman’s Drive-In donated coupons for a free small cone and Potts’ Top Dog donated coupons for a free hot dog.
There was a giveaway for a basket of baseball themed items including Crackerjacks, baseball books and a $35 gift card from Potts’ Top Dog.
Participants could also bid on more than 20 pieces of Sheldon’s artwork with proceeds benefiting the library.
During the celebration, everyone walked down to the creek to watch 456 miniature plastic tortoises in the tortoise creek race.

The plastic tortoises were purchased by individuals as a library fundraiser. Each tortoise had a number and they were all dumped into the creek to see which three would cross the finish line first. The fastest tortoise won $300, second place won $150 and third place won $50.

“We’re thrilled that we could offer this free event for the community while also raising funds for the library with the Tortoise Trek Creek Race,” said Shoemaker. “It’s been awesome to see this event grow and we’re already looking forward to next year!”
This is the second year for the birthday party and creek race and one of the bigger fundraisers for the Brandywine Community Library.
