Brandywine Heights Middle School to host Veterans Day program and luncheon

The Brandywine Heights School District will host a Veterans Day program and luncheon for the community on Nov. 10.

The program will be held at the middle school at 200 W. Weis St., Topton, and is designed to honor the country, thank veterans for their service, and promote citizenship within the student body and faculty, officials said in a release.

Leading up to the day of the program, fourth- through eighth-grade students will be participating in the American Legion Americanism essay contest. They also have the opportunity to compete in a schoolwide poster contest. Winners of the contests will be recognized with a ribbon during the assembly. Essay writers also have a chance to win a monetary prize from the American Legion.

Additionally, students will be encouraged to do service projects throughout October and November and will be recognized for those efforts during the program.

On the morning of the program, some veterans will be invited to speak to classes or be part of a question and answer session.

Veterans may also come to view the patriotic displays throughout the building, visit the hospitality room where they can enjoy snacks and drinks while socializing with other vets, see some of the artifacts from the Topton Veterans Museum, and interact with therapy dogs.

During the featured assembly, someone will receive the coveted Patriot Award, which recognizes a veteran or community member or group for exceptional service to their country and/or community.

After the assembly, veterans will be escorted to the school cafeteria for a free luncheon.

The Nov. 10 activities will begin at 9 a.m. and run through 2:15 p.m.

Those with questions can call the middle school at 610-682-5131, or contact event coordinator Karl Kotsch at karkot@bhasd.org.
