Brandywine Community Library will be celebrating its mascot’s 37th birthday with a party and a creek race.
The library’s mascot, Sheldon, is a Greek tortoise that lives in the library. His birthday will be celebrated with free family activities such as face painting, sand art, Plinko and lawn games on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 10 a.m. to non at the Topton Community Park.
The event will also feature a Tortoise Trek Creek Race where plastic numbered tortoises will race in the Toad Creek to see which will cross the finish line first. There will be cash prizes for the first three tortoises to cross the finish line. Participants do not need to be present to win. Anyone age 18 and older can ‘adopt’ a tortoise to race. Tortoises may be purchased online or at the library.
Complete rules and online purchase links are available on the library’s website www.berkslibraries.org/branch/brandywine/fundraising.
Sheldon has been busy painting and will also be auctioning off his artwork. All proceeds benefit the Brandywine Community Library.
ID theft and scams info event
In a partnership with M&T Bank, Brandywine Community Library will host an informational event on Aug. 21 at 1 p.m.
The hour-long program will inform consumers on how to protect against identity theft and scams that the M&T Bank has experienced recently.
“This event is aimed at bringing awareness to our community,” Brandywine Community Library Director Heather Wicke said in the release. “An M&T Bank representative will share current scams happening in our community and ways our community members can protect themselves as well as prevent identity theft.”
The event supports financial literacy, one of the five key essentials in the Pennsylvania Library Association’s PA Forward initiative.
The PA Forward initiative demonstrates how libraries can be key to powering progress and elevating the quality of life in Pennsylvania by fueling the types of knowledge essential to success: Basic Literacy, Information Literacy, Civic and Social Literacy, Health Literacy, and Financial Literacy.
Brandywine Community Library is a Gold Level Library in the Pennsylvania Library Association’s PA Forward program. The library has held this high level status since earning it in 2020. Prior to 2020, they had been awarded Bronze and Silver Star status in each of the five literacy categories.
