Bulletin board: Holiday event to be held at Boone homestead

Daniel Boone Homestead in Exeter Township will host “A Homestead Holiday” on Sunday, Dec. 8, from noon to 4 p.m. The event promises a look at Christmas as it was experienced almost 300 years ago.

Visitors can learn about English and Pennsylvania German holiday celebrations, listen to carolers and an old-time band, visit with Santa and the Belsnickel and enjoy Christmas crafts and activities.

There will be crafts and activities for children, including a Christmas scavenger hunt.

Complimentary hot chocolate and hot wassail will be available. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for those 65 and older, $5 for ages 6 to 17 and free for children under 5 and Daniel Boone Homestead Associates members.

Photographic society

The Berks Photographic Society presents a hybrid Zoom session, “Creative Motivation,” Monday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. in Suite 326 at the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, 201 Washington St., Reading.

The program is led by Jonathan Vaines of the UK, who will present an artistic approach to photography, stepping out of the mainstream. Along with individual images, he will discuss the motivational benefits of working with projects, sets and groups of images, creating art from simple, everyday things around us.

Garden folklore

Pennsylvania Heartland Herb Society invites the public to a program on herbal and garden folklore presented by Sarah Lisenmaier of Rabbit Run. It will be held Thursday, Nov. 21, at West Lawn United Methodist Church, 15 Woodside Ave. Social gathering at 9 a.m., program at 9:30.

Celebrate Recovery

Celebrate Recovery, a Christ-centered, 12-step program for those struggling with hurt, pain, or addiction, meets Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. at GT Church, 1110 Snyder Road, Spring Township. Participants do not have to be members of the church. For more information, call 610-413-5049 or 484-577-6898.

The Reading Musical Foundation, WCR Center for the Arts and Dave Kline Productions will present Guitar-A Rama 2024 on Saturday, Nov. 23 at the WCR Center for the Arts, 140 N. Fifth St., Reading.

The event kicks off with a workshop and jam session at 1:30 p.m., followed by a three-hour show at 2:30. The lineup features the Quarantined Quartet, Josh Taylor, and Dave Kline & The Gypsy Jazz-Blues Fusion Band. Doors open at 1.

Pottery event

Stahl’s Pottery Preservation Society is holding “A Stahl’s Family Christmas” Friday, Nov. 22, through Sunday, Nov. 24, at 6826 Corning Road, Zionsville.

Hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday.  Admission is $5 per person. Those under 18 get in free, and there is no charge for parking.

Brief tours of the pottery will be available, and fresh baked cookies will be served. A heated tent will house about 10 potters selling their wares, and the society will be selling its own mementos.  Cookies, candy, hot chocolate, hot cider and coffee will be available for sale, and Schaeffer Catering will be selling hot, fresh food.

Blandon history

The Fleetwood Area Historical Society will meet Wednesday, Nov. 20, at the Keystone Villa of Fleetwood, 501 Hoch Road, Maidencreek Township. There will be a program on the history of Blandon. The society’s business meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Residents, some of whom helped provide input to the program, will join the group after dinner.

Sinking Spring program

The Sinking Spring Area Historical Society meets Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. in Sinking Spring Borough Hall, 3940 Penn Avenue, front entrance.  Paul Druzba will present “Rigg – From Farmer to Trolley Tycoon,” vintage views of horsecars and trolleys and how a Berks boy would control 62 corporations and found Met-Ed.  Parking in rear lot off Columbia Avenue. Library open house

The Adamstown Area Library is hosting an open house from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, to celebrate the Extraordinary Give and its fourth year in a new building.

There will be music, light refreshments, fun activities for kids, games, and community connections. There will be a Thanksgiving basket giveaway that includes a turkey as well as a penny social with a selection of beautiful baskets. The library will offer food and drinks, including hot dogs donated by Denver Meats and donuts, apples, and cider donated by Brecknock Orchards.

The Friends will hold a book sale during the open house, and the first 50 people to complete the adult scavenger hunt will receive a coupon for one free book.

Breast cancer exhibit

The Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition’s “67 Women, 67 Counties” exhibit will be on display Nov. 21 through Dec. 5 at the Muhlenberg Community Library, 3612 Kutztown Road, Laureldale. Admission is free. See Muhlenbergcommunitylibrary.org for more information.

Christmas bazaar

A Christmas bazaar is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 23, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Community United Church of Christ, 3330 St. Lawrence Ave., St. Lawrence. The event includes breakfast, lunch, cookies, soup, potato filling, basket raffle, crafts, and an indoor flea market with a $2 bag sale at noon.

Genealogy meeting

Berks County Genealogical Society will hold its monthly meeting Thursday,  Nov. 21, at 6:30 p.m. in the Society library on the fourth floor of the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, 201 Washington St., Reading.  Guest speaker will be Jonathan Bond from the Albany Township Historical Society. Doors open at 6 p.m.  Admission is free.

Grief support

The sudSSpirit grief support group for those that have experienced the sudden unexpected death of a spouse or significant other will meet Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 6 p.m. in the Exeter Community Library, 4569 Prestwick Drive, Exeter Township. Mansion open house

The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley will hold its annual Christmas Open House on Sunday, Dec. 1, from 1 to 4 p.m. at 237-249 W. Main St., Ephrata

Guests will be welcome to tour all three floors of the Connell Mansion, which will be decorated for the holiday. It features 13 rooms of exhibit space filled with artifacts.

Mark Herr will perform on an antique pump organ, and Ephrata High School students Anya Gilbert and Sarah Taylor will play flute. There will be a visit by Santa Claus.

Other activities include demonstrations of type-set printing and a craft activity. Refreshments will be available. There will be a Christkindlmarkt featuring ornaments by local artisans.

Barn tour book

The Lancaster County Barn Tour book, created in cooperation between the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster and the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley is available for sale as the holiday season begins.

The book is a guide to some of the most impressive barns that remain across Lancaster County. The book includes photos and bios of each barn, which are easily viewed from the roadway.

Less than 150 copies remain, and a second printing is not guaranteed. Books can be purchased from the HSCV and HPTLC websites, or in person at the historical society. The book also is available at Ephrata Cloister, Mainspring of Ephrata, Lititz Historical Foundation, Landis Valley Farm Museum, Mennonite Life, LancasterHistory.org and Columbia Crossing Center.

Sweitzer barns

Historic Rock Ford in Lancaster is presenting a lecture on the history of Sweitzer barns in Lancaster County to be held Saturday, Nov. 23, at 1 p.m.

The two-level bank barn, or Sweitzer barn, appeared initially in the mid-18th century. Author Greg Huber will discuss the factors that helped to influence its making and use.

Copies of Huber’s book “The Historic Barns of Southeastern Pennsylvania” will be available for purchase and signing.

Leesport history

The Leesport Area Historical Society will present a program on Monday, Nov. 25, at 7 p.m. in Bethany EC Church, 308 Main St. Jean Davis will discuss the women who traveled west with their family, sometimes against their will, to seek a better life. The stories are told, often in their own words, in heartbreaking detail.

ESP program

Dale E. Graff, founder and former director of Project Stargate, will present a program on E.S.P. at Soul Café on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 9:30 a.m. at West Lawn United Methodist Church, 15 Woodside Ave.

Graff will examine ESP experiences, ancient and modern, ESP research and possible clues from quantum physics. For 30 years he was a civilian physicist with the Air Force’s Foreign Technology Division and the Defense Intelligence Agency. He was chief of the Advanced Concepts Office, chief of the Stargate psychic spy remote viewing unit at Fort Meade, M.d, and contract manager of remote viewing research at the Stanford Research Institute in California.
