A circle of light peace vigil and interfaith service in commemoration of Kristallnacht will take place Wednesday starting at 6:30 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 435 Court St., Reading. The community event is being held by the church in partnership with the Jewish Federation of Reading/Berks.
Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass or the November Pogrom, occurred on Nov. 9-10, 1938, and marked the beginning of the Holocaust, according to scholars. On those dates in Germany and Austria, hundreds of synagogues and 7,500 Jewish businesses, homes and community institutions were destroyed by mobs and Nazis. Nearly 100 Jews were killed, and 30,000 were arrested and sent to German concentration camps.
Jewish Federation leaders noted that this year’s observance takes place amid alarming and dangerous antisemitism in the aftermath of Hamas’ terror attack on Israel on Oct. 7.
