Bulletin board: Lonnie Walker IV to dedicate renovated court in Reading

Reading High School graduate and NBA player Lonnie Walker IV will be joining Reading officials Tuesday to dedicate the newly renovated Baer Park basketball court. The ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. followed by three games on the court at 446 W. Douglass St..

Cost of the $180,000 project was split between the city and the Lonnie Walker IV Foundation.

Walker and Mayor Eddie Moran will be among those offering remarks at the ceremony.

Sewing circle

A new monthly sewing circle begins Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Daniel Boone Homestead in Exeter Township with a program on the history of American flag making.

Did you ever wonder who made the first American flag, or how many stars and stripes were on it? Join the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates to learn this and other facts. The group will meet at the Visitor Center at 10 a.m. Please bring along a project of your choice (knitting, cross-stitch, quilting, etc.)

Concert and fireworks

The Reading Symphony Orchestra will perform a free concert followed by fireworks on July 4 at Enersys headquarters, 2366 Bernville Road, Bern Township (across from Reading Regional Airport).

Grounds open at 6:30 p.m., with the concert beginning at 8. Rain date is July 5. Attendees should bring chairs.

While the event is free, those planning to attend are asked to reserve tickets in advance. Fifth St. in Reading.

The orchestra will be collecting nonperishable food items for Helping Harvest at the concert.

Golf fundraiser

The Antietam High School volleyball program is holding a four-man scramble golf outing fundraiser July 15 at Manor Golf Club in Sinking Spring.

The event begins at 1:15 p.m. Registration starts at 11:45 a.m.

The cost is $320 and includes entry into all events, 18 holes of golf, riding cart, lunch, BBQ chicken dinner and a chance to win prizes.

Concert series

Muhlenberg Township is holding a summer concert series on Friday nights from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Jim Dietrich Park.

This year’s lineup is as follows:

July 7 – Dad 7 Company with Smokehouse Food Truck and Lio Colon Food Bus as food vendors

July 21 – Brass Pockets with Spuds Gourmet Burgers and Taco Revolution as food vendors

Aug. 4 –SlothLuvsChunk with Cataneda’a and Muchiez Food Truck as food vendors

Aug. 18 – Band TBD with Wingman Food Truck

The POP Truck from Pollen Consolidated will be selling adult beverages at these concerts. Spectators are welcome to bring their own dinner but no outside beverages.

The Muhlenberg Arts Board is the sponsoring agency for these concerts. There will be an opportunity to make donations at each concert.

Alzheimer’s support group

Keystone Villa at Douglassville is hosting a support group for people caring for a loved one living with memory impairment. The villa and Open Door Training and Development’s next session for Alzheimer’s disease family caregivers is scheduled for Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the Personal Care building at 1152 Ben Franklin Highway East.

Visits from loved ones can be a source of comfort for people with dementia. Learn tips to help you make visits with your loved one comforting and your time together more meaningful.

Friendly’s fundraiser

The West Lawn-Wyomissing Hills Library is holding a fundraising night at Friendly’s, 3074 Penn Ave., Spring Township, on Thursday, June 29, from 5 to 9 p.m. Eat in or takeout. A portion of the profits support the library. Call 610-678-1180 for information. Baked goods for sale.

Grief support group

The sudSSpirit grief support group for those who have experienced the sudden, unexpected death or loss of a spouse or significant other will meet on Tuesday June 27 at 6 p.m. in the Exeter Community Library, 4569 Prestwick Drive, Exeter Township.

Declaration reading

To celebrate the real Independence Day, a reading of the Declaration of Independence will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. outside the White Horse Inn in Douglassville.

The reading is being held by the Historic Preservation Trust of Berks County in cooperation with Amity Township, the Friends of Hopewell Furnace and the Society of Pennsylvania Archaeology John Shrader Chapter 21.

Admission is free. People are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair.

The White Horse Inn is located at 31 Old Philadelphia Pike, Douglassville, PA 19518.

Though the national holiday celebrating our nation’s independence from Great Britain takes place July 4, independence was first declared on July 2, 1776. The reading at the White Horse Inn marks the date of our nation’s 247th birthday.

The program features performances by Berks Opera Company’s Francine Black and Isabelle Stetka. Christine Emmert, who will read from the Declaration, is a writer, actress, director and educator. Edie Shean-Hammond, former superintendent of Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, will provide interpretive comments.

The first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in Berks County was on July 8, 1776, in villages throughout the area.

July 4 celebration

Daniel Boone Homestead in Exeter Township is holding an Independence Day observance on July 4 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event will offer information on the different kinds of troops who fought for America’s freedom during the Revolutionary War including the militia, Continentals, Dragoons, and Riflemen. Guided Boone House tours will be offered throughout the day as well as blacksmithing and gun-building demonstrations. Activities for children include a militia muster activity, Colonial toys and games and crafts.

Food will be available for purchase.

Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors 65 and older and $5 for children ages 6 to 17. There is no charge for children under 5 and Daniel Boone Homestead Association members. Drift Jam

Muhlenberg Township will hold its Drift Jam on Saturday, July 15. The program begins with a lazy afternoon floating down the Schuylkill River in a kayak from the Leesport area to Jim Dietrich Park.

Participants are to meet at Jim Dietrich Park near the red brick pavilion at noon, then travel to the Leesport post office at 4 E. Wall St. to gain access to the river.  Rental equipment and shuttling service will be provided by Take IT Outdoors (TIO) and includes a kayak, paddles and life jackets for $65 per person. The shuttle fee is $20 per person for those who have their own equipment.  Participants must pre-register, wear a life vest and sign a waiver form. Register and reserve equipment at www.muhlenbergtwp.com under facility and program rentals. Deadline is July 12.

The event continues with a jam in front of the farmhouse at Jim Dietrich Park. Bring your own chair and enjoy performances by Trouble City All Stars from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and Bad Slice from 6 to 9.

No outside beverages allowed.  Local Scout Troop #155 and the Muhlenberg Community Library will be selling food. Adult beverages will be sold in the beer tent.

The jam is open to all, not just those who participate in the river drift.
