Bulletin board: Run to raise funds for Berks suicide prevention

The seventh annual ruOK? 5k & 1.5 Mile Walk is scheduled for March 30 at Penn State Berks in Spring Township. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the race starts at 9.

The event brings awareness to the Berks County Suicide Prevention Task Force and its ruOK? Campaign. It is sponsored by Threshold Rehabilitation Services Inc. and Penn State Berks in collaboration with the task force. Proceeds from past events have funded public park benches with the ruOK? Logo and a mural in Reading.

Blood drive

Fleetwood Bank will host a community blood drive Tuesday from 1 to 7 p.m. at its branch at 455 Main St., Shoemakersville. Appointments are required and can be scheduled at bit.ly/FleetwoodBankBloodDrive.

This is the fourth blood drive the bank has hosted at its Shoemakersville branch in collaboration with Miller-Keystone Blood Center, which serves 35 hospitals in the region. According to Miller-Keystone, the community blood supply is at a critical state for O+, O- and B-, while platelets are urgently needed and A+ and AB- are a priority. Though A-, B+ and AB+ are stable, platelet donors are still needed.

All donors who register to donate blood through March 24 will have the opportunity to enter to win four tickets to see the Philadelphia Phillies vs. Cincinnati Reds game on April 1. The prize includes a $200 electronic gift card. Enter at www.giveapint.org/promotions/phillies-giveaway.

Craft show

The 27th annual Daniel Boone Optimist Club Spring Craft Show is scheduled for Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Daniel Boone Area Middle School, 1845 Weavertown Road, Amity Township. Easter lecture

Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, west of Stouchsburg, will present an illustrated lecture by Linda Manwiller on the Pennsylvania Germans and how they have influenced America’s celebration of the Easter season.

This presentation is on Sunday, March 17, at 2 p.m. in the church’s gathering room.  The program is free of charge.  The church address is located at 27 Longs Church Lane, Marion Township.

Spiritual Exploration

The following Spiritual Exploration Project events are coming up in March:

Spirit on Tap meets Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in Reading with a panel discussion on artificial intelligence and whether robots will develop consciousness. Dr. Harry L. Serio will moderate a panel with computer expert Charlie Curtis, astrophysicist Dale Graff and the Rev. Bill Worley.

Contemplative Spirituality book discussion on “The Brothers Karamazov,” Thursday at 9:30 a.m., St. John’s United Church of Christ, 257 W. Walnut St., Kutztown. This week’s focus is on Book 11 of the novel.

Also Thursday at the Kutztown church, there will be a 10:30 a.m. discussion on UFOs and the theological implications of alien civilizations. The program will be presented by Craig Bennett and Serio.

Native American Shamanism, Tuesday, March 19, at 9:30 a.m. at West Lawn United Methodist Church, 15 Woodside Ave. Retired college administrator and teacher Dr. Nancy Omaha Boy will discuss the ways indigenous people approach the metaphysical world and how it differs from Euro-Asian religions.

Author appearance

Award-winning mystery book author Nancy A. Hughes will present a program at West Lawn-Wyomissing Hills Library Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Hughes will discuss her gardens and read from her latest book at the library, located at 101 Woodside Ave., West Lawn.
