Campus notes, September 15, 2024

The following area students graduated from James Madison University, Harrisonburg, Va.: Peyton McDaniel, Robeson Township, bachelor of science in sport and recreation management with highest honors; Kara McClure, Robeson Township, master of science in sport and recreation management.

Lebanon Valley

The following area students graduated from Lebanon Valley College: Humphrey Malama, Newmanstown,  master of science in clinical mental health counseling; Brooke Showalter, Mohnton, bachelor of science in digital communications with high honors; Brian Ward, Exeter Township, bachelor of science in environmental science.

KU faculty awards

Dr. Feisal Murshed, associate professor of business administration, and Dr. Christine Saidi, professor of history, have been awarded Kutztown University’s 2024 Chambliss Faculty Research Awards for their research and scholarship endeavors. The award recognizes the highest achievement in research and scholarship.

Murshed has served in the business administration department since 2013. His research expertise lies in the intersection of customer-centric marketing strategy and consumer choices/decision-making. His research has appeared in top scholarly journals in marketing. During his time in KU, he has co-authored 20 peer-reviewed articles and 14 peer-reviewed conference proceedings.

Saidi has been a KU faculty member for 16 years. She is an African history scholar whose research focuses on gender and linguistics, especially in early Bantu social history. She has published two books as well as articles in leading peer-reviewed journals.

She received five grants and a three-year award from the National Endowments for the Humanities in 2019. The Kutztown University Research Committee has funded two of her proposals to conduct research in Europe and Africa. She also obtained a state grant to create Open Education Resources to help make Africana resources available to all students and teachers.

Professor on board

Dr. Yasoda Sharma, professor and director of the Bachelor of Social Work program at Kutztown University, has been reelected to the board of directors for the National Association of Social Workers. She has also been appointed to the executive committee and currently serves as chair of the NASW National Committee on Women’s Issues.

NASW works to enhance the professional growth of its members while maintaining high standards to advance social policies that improve the lives of individuals, families, organizations and communities around the globe.

Sharma is a tenured professor at KU and earned her Ph.D. in social work from the University of Texas at Arlington, a master’s degree in social work with a specialization in psychiatry and social medicine and an undergraduate degree in psychology from India. She has extensive experience working with national and international organizations. Her social work career focuses on domestic violence, HIV/AIDS, international social work and human trafficking.

Sharma also serves as a board member and the KU representative for the PASSHE Women’s Consortium. She is chair of the KU Commission on the Status of Women and treasurer of the KU-APSCUF International Faculty Caucus and was appointed to a committee to aid in developing a strategic plan to incorporate and bring greater awareness to the diversity, equity and inclusion initiative across the KU campus community.
