Cat theft under investigation in Schuylkill County

The investigation into the alleged theft of a Schuylkill County family’s cat, and a search for the pet, continues.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said Monday that they are investigating the theft in Cressona with possible other indicators of criminal activity. Investigating officer Trooper Larry Reedy said he could not elaborate until the investigation is complete.

He said state police are still interviewing witnesses and potential suspects.

The investigation began Jan. 3 after Dawn McShaw said her family discovered through video footage that Catalina was taken from their Hillcroft Avenue home on Dec. 30.

McShaw said that as many as three people may be involved with reportedly dumping the cat on Berne Drive in Schuylkill Haven. Businesses and residents have pooled together a $1,000 reward for information on Catalina’s whereabouts.

Meanwhile, Tandi Kashner of the Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA in Pine Grove said the shelter phones have been ringing constantly with possible sightings.

Kashner encourages anyone who may have spotted a cat similar to Catalina, a black and white long-haired Maine Coon mix, to call the shelter at 570-345-3540 or email rsmspca17963@gmail.com. She said photos are preferable if residents can safely capture a picture to send with possible sighting tips.

“Every sighting has been looked into,” Kashner said. “At this point we just have to be careful that we’re not trespassing onto people’s properties.”

She described one sighting between 5 and 7 p.m. Sunday at Schuylkill Haven Turkey Hill as “a promising lead.” The cat did appear injured, Kashner added, but there’s no certainty it’s Catalina.

Still, community support has uplifted those searching, she said.

“The community hasn’t stopped, that’s for sure,” Kashner said. “It’s amazing; it’s wonderful just to know that there’s people that care and are willing to drop anything and everything to help us and the family of Catalina.”
