Committee recommends PIAA add a third class in track and field

The PIAA track and field steering committee unanimously voted last month to recommend to the organization’s board of directors to increase the number of classifications from two to three in track and field.

At its June 19 meeting, Northern Lehigh School District Athletic Director Bryan Geist, the District 11 representative on the committee, made the motion to increase the number of classes and it was seconded by Jeff Batzel, the District 5 representative. The committee then voted unanimously to approve the recommendation.

The motion goes now to the PIAA board of directors, which meets Wednesday, July 17.

At the June 19 meeting, PIAA Chief Operating Officer Mark Byers offered an alternative which included classifying schools 60/40, rather than offering an additional classification.

Under the current classifications, the PIAA holds championships in Class 2A and Class 3A. Medals are awarded to the top eight finishers. In cross country, the PIAA has three classes – 1A, 2A and 3A and medals are awarded to the top 25 finishers in each class.

According to the PIAA’s web site, 1,431 schools are members of the organization, with 583 of them senior high schools and 594 are junior high/middle schools. The PIAA also says more than 350,000 students participate in interscholastic athletics at all levels (varsity, junior varsity, or otherwise) each year.

The PIAA Track and Field Championships are held every spring on the Friday and Saturday of Memorial Day weekend at Shippensburg University. The district qualifying meets are held from 7 to 12 days before the state meet, depending on each district’s scheduling.
