A detached garage and its contents — including more than a half-dozen antique or classic vehicles and motorcycles — were destroyed in a Sunday night blaze in Spring Township.
The total loss could reach $1 million, township Fire Marshal Troy Hatt said Monday.
Crews were called to the residential property in the 100 block of Gelsinger Road in the township’s rural southern section just before 7 p.m. after a relative of the property owners saw a glow coming from the property, Hatt said.
The roughly 40-foot by 60-foot garage was already engulfed by flames when crews arrived. The flames could be seen for miles because of the high elevation of the property.
Crews were hampered by temperatures well below freezing. Water from fire hoses quickly froze on the long, paved driveway and Gelsinger Road, making it difficult for firefighters and apparatus to move around, Hatt said.
Water had to be shuttled to the scene by tanker trucks because there was no nearby hydrant.
The township road crew spread salt and anti-skid material.
““The Spring Township road crew was a huge help on the road and also the driveway,” Hatt said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Hatt said a damage estimate hasn’t been completed. He added that it’s difficult to estimate the loss because some of the cars cannot be replaced.
