Daniel Boone girls, Wilson boys win BCIAA bowling championships

Daniel Boone and Wilson were crowned BCIAA team bowling champions on Thursday at Berks Lanes.

The Blazers won the girls title for the first time, defeating defending champ Gov. Mifflin 2,515-2,437. The Bulldogs earned their second consecutive boys title with a 3,282-3,217 victory over Exeter.

“We knew we had a good team this year,” Daniel Boone coach George Torak said. “We knew it when we bowled Gov. Mifflin the first time that we could actually come out and win this thing.”

The Blazers fell to the the Berks I champ Mustangs 2-1 early in the regular season, but started strong in the championship match. Daniel Boone led 870-811 after the first game and remained ahead the rest of the way.

“We just stayed calm all day,” Torak said. “That’s what helped.”

The Berks II runner-up Blazers were led by sophomore Julia Maggs, who bowled a 210, 197 and 192 for a 599 series. She was the only Daniel Boone bowler to score 190 or higher in all three games.

“It’s very important to me,” Maggs said about winning the title. “It means a lot that we were the first (team) getting to (the county championship).”

The Blazers led 1,712-1,596 after two games before Gov. Mifflin began to mount a comeback in the third game. The Mustangs outscored Boone 841-803 that game, but it was not enough to take the lead.

“We just kept each other calm,” Maggs said. “If someone got down, we just picked them right up.”

On the boys side, Berks I champion Wilson led 1,215-1,110 after the first game and remained ahead the rest of the match. All five Bulldogs bowled a 217 or higher in the first game.

“It means just as much as winning last year,” Wilson coach Ryan Wyandt said. “This team came to perform and they stepped it up.”

The Bulldogs were led by junior Tyler Wentzel, who rolled a 232, 236 and 221 for a 689 series. He was the only Wilson bowler to roll over 200 in all three games.

“It feels great,” Wentzel said. “It feels great to (win) it again.”

The Berks I runner-up Eagles won the second game 1.078-1.010 to cut the Bulldogs’ lead to 2,225-2,188. However, Wilson responded in the third game, outscoring Exeter 1,057-1,029 to seal the championship.

“They stepped up and they held their own,” Wyandt said. “I’m proud of every single one of them.”
