Dave Stahler has been hired as the new football coach at Berks Catholic, the school announced Monday.
Stahler, a 1998 Holy Name grad, takes over for Rick Keeley, who retired last month and went 118-41 as the only head coach in the 13 seasons since Central Catholic and Holy Name merged to form Berks Catholic.
Stahler began his football coaching career at Holy Name in 2001.
He was elevated to associate head coach at Berks Catholic in 2012 and became the offensive coordinator in 2014.
“I am excited to be a part of this great football program,” Stahler said in a release from the school. “I feel truly blessed to get to work with such great young men. I am a Saint to the core, and I look forward to working with outstanding coaches and a supportive administration.”
Stahler has helped the Saints win four District 3 titles: 2017 and 2016 in Class 4A, 2015 and 2013 in Class 2A. He also was part of the Holy Name staff that guided the Blue Jays to a Class 1A district championship in 2010.
Berks Catholic went 5-6 in 2023, including a 40-21 win over Hamburg in the Eastern Conference Class 3A championship game.
Stahler played football, basketball and baseball at Holy Name.
He graduated from Kutztown University in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education, math and physics. He completed his master’s degree in math education from KU in 2010.
Stahler began teaching at Holy Name as a math teacher in 2007, then as a science teacher. He serves as the science department chairperson at Berks Catholic.
“We are excited for Coach Stahler to begin as head coach,” Berks Catholic athletic director Bill Hess said in the release. “He is an organized, passionate and dedicated teacher, coach and mentor. We look forward to many years of success under his leadership.”
