Detour placed around Kutz Mill Bridge in Greenwich Township

Detours have been placed around Kutz Mill Bridge in Greenwich Township, Berks County officials announced.

The covered bridge on Kutz Mill Road has been closed and temporary barriers set up, the county said in a news release.

A permanent detour will be in place by Monday, officials said.

One of five remaining covered bridges in the county, Kutz Mill Bridge spans the Sacony Creek just north of Kutztown.

The bridge is owned by the county, which is responsible for its maintenance and repair.

The 93-foot long historic structure was built in 1854. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.

According to the release, a portion of a wall at one end of the bridge eroded and collapsed, possibly as a result of recent heavy rains.

Greenwich Township staff noted the damage Thursday and informed Alan Piper, county transportation planner, and a county bridge crew was dispatched to investigate.

Inspectors from the engineering firm McCormick Taylor, West Whiteland Township, Chester County, will evaluate the damage to the bridge as soon as possible, the county said, and plans will be made for repairs.

There are no current estimates on the cost of the damage and duration of the detour, the county said.
